WSHS - 1st Eng. 9 - Short Story Literary Terms - Long/Tedder

| Protagonist | main character who solves the conflict |
| Antagonist | the character or force (nature) that creates the conflict |
| Dynamic character | a character who changes in a story (personality) |
| Static character | a character who stays the same in a story |
| Foreshadowing | a hint at what will happen later in the plot |
| Flashback | a recall of events that happened earlier in time |
| Fiction | plot that is created from an authors imagination |
| Non-fiction | writing that is based on facts and is true |
| Plot | a series of events in a story |
| Setting | when (season, year) and where a story happens |
| Theme | lesson about life the author is teaching |
| Point of view | perspective from which a story is told (first person = I, third person limited = he or she, third person omniscient = “God” viewpoint |
| Exposition | introduces the setting and the characters of the plot |
| Entanglement | the rising action of the plot; the conflict begins |
| Climax | the turning point of the plot; most exciting part |
| Denoument | the falling action fo the plot: conflict is resolved |
| Resolution | the conclusion of the plot |
| Irony | the opposite of what the audience expects happens |
| Suspense | actions that keep the reader interested and curious |
| Conflict | a struggle between two forces; internal = man vs. himself or external = man vs man or man vs. nature |
| Mood | the feelings of the audience toward the plot |
| Tone | the attitude the author puts into the plot |
| Symbol | an object that has a physical meaning but also stands for a larger idea |
| Direct characterization | the narrator tells you specifically what a character is like |
| Indirect characterization | the narrator tells you what a character is like through that character’s speech and actions |
