Simple Machines

QuestionAnswer
Simple Machine A mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force.
Machine A tool containing one or more parts that uses energy to perform an intended action.
Inclined Plane A ramp or a blade, set at an acute angle to a horizontal surface,
Wedge An object with at least one slanting side ending in a sharp edge, which cuts material apart. Made from two inclined planes
Pulley A simple machine that uses grooved wheels and a rope to raise, lower or move a load.
Lever a stiff bar that rests on a support called a fulcrum which lifts or moves loads.
Fulcrum The point on which a lever rests or is supported and on which it pivots.
Wheel and axle A wheel with a rod, called an axle, through its center lifts or moves loads.
Screw An inclined plane wrapped around a pole which holds things together or lifts materials.
Work When a force that is applied to an object moves that object.
Potential energy Energy that is stored
Kinetic Energy Energy of motion
