Highwayman

Describe the highwayman brave, dashing, had great weapons, was a thief (robber)
Describe Bess pretty, loyal, black hair and dark brown eyes
WHERE does the action take place? mainly at the Inn
WHEN does the action take place? at night; midnight
What are the highwayman's plans? He will rob someone (get the prize) and then come back in the morning (at dawn)for Bess unless they are chasing him--then it will be later.
Why does Bess think she needs to warn the highwayman? He will be killed if he comes back to her. She loves him and she wants to let him know that he is being ambushed.
How does Bess communicate her warning? She shoots herself.
How do we know that Bess and the highwayman have met before? They had a special knock and whistle that they used. Bess opens up right away when she hears it.
What details from the poem show that the highwayman is a romantic, dashing man? His clothes, his weapons, his good looks, his bravery
What does the repeating of the word red give us a clue about? love, blood/death
What about the setting add to the romance? dark night makes it feel romantic and suspenseful
What do the last two stanas suggest about the love between Bess and her highwayman? It is so strong that even after death it lives on.
