Networking vocab

TermDefinition
Computer Network A local area network (LAN) is a network that connects computers and devices in a limited geographical area such as a home, school, office building, or closely positioned group of buildings. Each computer or device on the network is a node. Wired LANs are
Wide Area Network a computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area
Local Area Network a system for linking private telecommunications equipment, as in a building or cluster of buildings.
Cross Platform Connectivity A term that describes a language, software application or hardware device that works on more than one system platform
Internet a vast computer network linking smaller computer networks worldwide (usually preceded by the). The Internet includes commercial, educational, governmental, and other networks, all of which use the same set of communications protocols.
Intranet a computer network with restricted access, as within a company, that uses software and protocols developed for the Internet.
Peripherals Devices Peripherals are computer devices, such as a CD-ROM drive or printer, that is not part of the essential computer.
