| denotation | the dictionary definition; the literal meaning |
| synonym | words that mean the same or nearly the same |
| antonym | words that mean the opposite or nearly the opposite |
| context clues | Information (such as a definition, synonym, antonym, or example) that appears near a word or phrase and offers direct or indirect suggestions about its meaning. |
| literal language | language that means exactly what it says |
| figurative language | language used to produce images in readers' minds to express ideas in imaginative ways |
| alliteration | repetitive consonant sounds at the beginning of words |
| onomatopoeia | words that sound like the sound they make |
| simile | a comparison that uses like or as |
| metaphor | a comparison that does not use like or as |
| personification | when an author has something nonhuman do something only humans can do |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration |
| oxymoron | a technique in which two words with opposite meanings are put together for a special effect |
| irony | a technique that uses a word or phrase to mean the exact opposite of it's normal meaning |
| idiom | words used in a special way that may be different from their literal meaning |
| root | a word or word base from which other words are made by adding a prefix or a suffix |
| prefix | a word part that is added before a word that changes the meaning of the word it is added to |
| suffix | a word part that is added after a word that sometimes tells what part of speech a word is |
