Unit 5 - Mr. Hunt

Ratios and Proportional Reasoning

TermDefinition
Scale Up/Down to change size proportionally either bigger or smaller
Proportion two equal fractions or ratios
Ratio a relative comparison of two quantities of the same unit
Unit Rate a comparison of two values where 1 is a unit ( 12 miles to 1 gallon)
Rate a ratio that compares quantities of different units
Constant of Proportionality the multiplication relationship BETWEEN two quantities
Percent a ratio that has 100 on the bottom as a total
Sales tax the amount added on to the purchase of something bought.
Discount A reduction in price. Often said as a percent of the total.
Commission A fee paid for services, usually a percentage of the total cost.
% increase The percent that is added on to the total (100%)
% decrease The percent that is subtracted from the total (100%)
tips A percent added on to a meal served by a waiter/waitress or other excellent customer service. Usually 20%.
mark ups the amount added to the cost price of items to cover the store's overhead and profit.
dependent variable The "output" value of a function. It is the y-axis when graphing.
independent variable An "input" value of a function. It is the x-axis when graphing.
