Ratios and Proportional Reasoning
| Term | Definition |

| Scale Up/Down | to change size proportionally either bigger or smaller |
| Proportion | two equal fractions or ratios |
| Ratio | a relative comparison of two quantities of the same unit |
| Unit Rate | a comparison of two values where 1 is a unit ( 12 miles to 1 gallon) |
| Rate | a ratio that compares quantities of different units |
| Constant of Proportionality | the multiplication relationship BETWEEN two quantities |
| Percent | a ratio that has 100 on the bottom as a total |
| Sales tax | the amount added on to the purchase of something bought. |
| Discount | A reduction in price. Often said as a percent of the total. |
| Commission | A fee paid for services, usually a percentage of the total cost. |
| % increase | The percent that is added on to the total (100%) |
| % decrease | The percent that is subtracted from the total (100%) |
| tips | A percent added on to a meal served by a waiter/waitress or other excellent customer service. Usually 20%. |
| mark ups | the amount added to the cost price of items to cover the store's overhead and profit. |
| dependent variable | The "output" value of a function. It is the y-axis when graphing. |
| independent variable | An "input" value of a function. It is the x-axis when graphing. |
