Grade 9 Englsih literary terms

QuestionAnswer
Character= an individual in a story, poem, or play. Characteristics revealed through dialogue,
Plot= the plan or sequence of events in a story
Setting= the time, place, and mood, where the events occur.
Mood= how you feel when you read the passage what the author creates through words creates
Alliteration= a repeated consonant sound
Allusion= a reference to something or someone out of the story etc.
Antagonist= opposes the hero villain
Hyperbole= exaggeration
Imagery= writer creates a picture using words
Irony= a literary device that creates a contrast between what is said and that is meant or
Foreshadowing= clues that let the reader know what will happen later on in the story
Metaphor= a comparison that does not used words like or as
Paradox= a phrase that seems to contradictory but actually has some truth
Pathos= anything in a work that pulls your emotions
Personification= something non human described using human traits
Satire= making fun of something or someone, but also making a serious point
Simile= a comparison of two things using words like or as
Symbol= person, place, or thing that stands for itself and something else
Tone= the attitude of author towards the subject they are writing about
Point or View= from whose viewpoint the story is being told from first point, third person, or third person omniscient
Theme= central idea or meaning of a work
