What is reconstruction? Period of time after the civil war for rebuilding the south
What was the difficulty for the President and congress in rebuilding the nation after the Civil war? What did they struggle with for the difficult task of reconstruction? They had to decide what the terms and conditions would be for the former confederate states to rejoin the Union of the US.
What were the challenges facing the nation after the Civil War ended in 1865 1) Saved the Union but devastated American society 2) South in total disarray 3) Southerners were bitter/angry about the union victory 4) President and congress struggled with task of reconstruction.
When did the civil war end? 1865
carpetbagger (D) term used by white southerners who opposed reconstruction to describe northerners who came to the south to fill government jobs and help rebuild the south.
Why were they called carpetbaggers? the suitcases they carried were made of carpet fabric

What was Lincoln's reconstruction plan? (SA) 1) grant amnesty to all southerners who pledged an oath of loyalty (except high ranking confederates) 2) Lincoln offered colonization for freed slaves in Africa and Carribbean
What did Lincoln's plan fail to address? (SA) 1) the problems of the freedman in America (Lincoln assinated before his plan could be implemented)
What was President Andrew Johnson's stance on the reconstruction plan? He agreed with President LIncoln's plan. However he was stopped from implementing it.
Why was President Andres Johnson unsuccessful in implementing Lincoln's plan? 1) not a popular president 2) congress dominated by republicans (Johnson was democrat) 3) Johnson was a southerner and former slave owner.
What did radical republican's want for a reconstruction plan? They wanted the south rebuilt with the presences of a strong military.
Which reconstruction plan was implemented for reconstruction in the south? And what did it represent? The radical reconstruction plan. This represents an interpretaion of the constitution in which the federal government was "hands on" and involved in the political, social and economic aspects of Amercican lives
What were the 3 goals of the Radical Republicans? What did it entail? (SA) 1) Prevent leaders of old confederacy from returning to power 2) make the republican party more powerful in the South 3) Guarantee african americans right to vote.
Compromise of 1877 (D) agreement to settle the disputed Presidential election of 1876 which, among other things, removed the union military from the south - thus ending reconstruction
tenant farmer (D) farmers who paid rent for the land they farm - very poor farm workers
sharecropper (D) paid a landlord a share of harvest in order to farm the land-
Why did reconstruction end in 1877? (SA) Northernes became tired of reconstruction 1) to much resistance from white southerners 2) americans wanted to forget anything that reminded them of the civil war 3) many thought the 13, 14, 15 amendments was enough to protect freedman in the south.
What was the result of reconstruction ending in 1877? (SA) 1) south returned to similar conditions of the south before civil war 2) white southern politicians returned to power 3) African Americans lost many (most of their civil rights)
What was the event that officially brought an end to reconstruction in 1877? (SA) Dispute over electoral college votes in the election of 1876 that resulted in compromise of 1877
