| Theme | Main idea/lesson or moral learned |
| Plot | 5 steps that make up the story |
| Character | Broken into two types: protagonist/antagonist. |
| Setting | Creates the feeling/mood using senses and imagery. |
| Point of View | Who is telling the story. |
| foreshadowing | giving hints to the reader about what is to happen next |
| flashback | The author interrupts the story to go back in time to add scenes or information. |
| Irony | The opposite of what is expected to happen. |
| Tone | The “feeling” conveyed by the way the writer writes about his subject |
| Realism | The author attempts to portray life in his/her novel realistically. |
| Romanticism | The author uses his imagination to present the world to us. |
| EXPOSITION | The beginning Stage 1 |
| CONFLICT | The problem of the story Stage 2 |
| COMPLICATION/RISING ACTION | Events that lead to the climax Stage 3 |
| CLIMAX | The turning point of the story Stage 4 |
| FALLING ACTION | The Events leading to the resolution of the story Stage 5 |
| RESOLUTION | The ending of the story Stage 6 |
