6th Grade Chapter 2 Operation Sense Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
numerical expression | mathematical phrase that includes only numbers and operation symbols: 4 + 5 |
variable | letter or symbol that can stand for one or more numbers |
algebraic expression | mathematical phrase that includes a variable 76 – a |
evaluate | find the value or solve |
equation | a statement showing the two quantities are equal: 4 x 4 = 14 + 2 |
solution | a value that, when substituted for the variable, makes an equation true; 76 – a = 45, a = 31 |
Commutative Property | property that states the order of addends or factors does not change the sum or product 34 + 41 = 41 + 34 |
Associative Property | property that states the way addends or factors are grouped does not change the sum or product 15 x (6 x 34) = (15 x 6) x 34 |
Distributive Property | property that states multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number tend then adding the products 14 x (7 + 3) = (14 x 7) + (14 x 3) |
Identity Property of Addition | property that states the sum of zero and any number is that number 58 + 0 = 58 |
Identity Property of Multiplication | property that states the product of 1 and any number is that number 86 x 1 = 86 |
compensation | a mental math strategy in which you change one addend to a multiple of ten and then adjust the other addend to keep the balance |
exponent | a number that tells how many times a base is to be used as a factor |
base | a number used as a repeated factor |
order of operations | rules to follow to evaluate numerical expressions |
