| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| experiment | a controlled test to see what happens in a certain situation |
| scientist | someone who uses observation and a systematic method to study the physical world |
| scientific method | systematic ways of observing, testing, and repeating experiments to attain knowledge |
| hypothesis | an educated guess |
| controlling variables | changing only one variable at a time in an experiment |
| qualitative observatons | observations that do not involve numbers (usually involves the senses) |
| quantitative observations | observations that involve numerical data |
| meter | unit of measure for LENGTH in the metric system |
| liter | unit of measure for VOLUME in the metric system |
| gram | unit of measure for MASS in the metric system |
| operational science | also called observational science, it is science that can be observed and reproduced |
| origins science | science that deals with figuring out past events |
