QuestionAnswer
What is main idea? The most important idea expressed in a paragraph or in an entire essay.
What is author's purpose? The reason something is written- to inform, persuade, or to entertain.
What is a summary? A brief statement describing the major points of a longer piece.
What is an inference? A judgement based on your own knowledge as well as the information supplied by the author.
How do you make an inference? Read between the lines and determine the hidden meaning.
What does it mean to draw a conclusion? Using the information you are given to sum up a situation or make a prediction about what will happen next.
What is point of view? The vantage point from which a story is told.
What are the three types of point of view? 1st person, 3rd person-limited, and third person-omniscient.
What is 1st person point of view? One character is telling the story- "I".
What is 3rd person limited point of view? Story is told by a narrator that focuses on the thoughts and feelings of one character.
What is third person omniscient point of view? Story is told by a narrator that is "All knowing", knows thoughts and feelings of all characters.
What is the setting of a story? The time and place that the story happens.
What is a conflict of a story? The problem in the story.
What is the plot of the story? The series of related events that make up the story.
What are the five important elements of the plot? Introduction or exposition, rising action, climax, conflict or complications, and resolution
How does the reader learn about a character? Through the author's description, what the character says, what the character does, and how other character's respong to him/her.
What are context clues? Using words in a passage to hlep you figure out (solve) the meaning of a word you don't know.
What is an analogy? A comparison between two seemingly dissimilar things. Ex. ear:sound::eye:sight. ( may also be written- ear is to sound as eye is to sight)

optional permitting a choice; not complusory.
scanned to make a wide sweeping search of.
itinerary the route of a journey.
bulged to be swollen outward.
chronological arranged in order of time.
competitor someone who competes to win something
potential capable of becoming real; able to happen.
aggressive ready to fight or attack.
acquaint to cause to know socially.
excess being more than usual, proper,or a specified amount.
What are character traits? terms that describe the personality of a character.
Name four organizational patterns of informaitonal texts. List, Chronological order, Cause and Effect, Generalizations.
Name three examples of character traits. Shy, friendly, brave.
