| Anthropomorphism | when an inanimate object is given human characteristics ex. In the forest, the darkness waited for me, I could heat its patient breathing (the object doesn't take on human form though it has human characteristics) |
| Anticlimax | occurs when an action produces far smaller results than one had been led to expect |
| Antihero | A protagonist who is markedly unheroic |
| Aphorism | A short witty saying |
| Apostrophe | A figure of speech wherein the speaker talks directly to something that is nonhuman |
| Archaism | The deliberate use of old-fashioned language |
| Aside | A speech made by an actor to the audience, stepping out of the action |
| Assonance | the repeated use of vowel sounds |
| Atmosphere | The emotional tone or background that surrounds a scene |
| Ballad | A long, narrative poem, typically written w a very regular meter/ rhyme and has a naive folksy quality |

| Pathos | A scene that evokes the feelings of pity, sadness |
| Black humor | making fun of something that is not comic (joking about suicide -> I wonder if this branch will hold my weight if I hang my self ) |
| Bombast | pretentious, exaggeratedly learned language |
| Burlesque | a broad parody, one that takes a style or form, such as a tragic drama and exaggerates it to a ridiculous degree |
| Cacophony(poetry) | when the writer purposely uses harsh/awkward sounds |
| Cadence | The beat/ rhythm of poetry in a general sense |
| Canto | The name for a section div in a long work of poetry |
| Caricature | A portrait (verbal/ect) that exaggerates a facet of personality |
| Catharsis | refers to the "cleansing" of emotion an audience member experiences, (having lived vicariously through a member on stage) |
| Chorus | a group of citizens who stand outside the main action on stage and comment on the action |
