Abstract style complex, discusses intangible qualities (good,evil,love) and seldom uses examples to support its points
Academic dry, theoretical writing -> little or not analytical possibilities
Accent the stressed portion of a word
Aesthetic a coherent sense of style
Aesthetic judgment artistic sense
Aesthetics the study of beauty
Allegory a story in which each aspect of the story has a symbolic meaning outside of the story
Alliteration repetition of initial consonant sounds
Allusion classical-> reference to Greek or Roman mythology topical-> refers to a current event popular-> refers to something from popular culture
Anachronism "misplaced in time"ex. if the actor playing Julius Caesar forgets his watch the effect will be anachronistic
Analogy a comparison-> tends to involve two or more symbolic parts (typically used 2 clarify a relationship)
Anthropomorphism when an inanimate object is given human characteristics ex. In the forest, the darkness waited for me, I could heat its patient breathing (the object doesn't take on human form though it has human characteristics)
Anticlimax occurs when an action produces far smaller results than one had been led to expect
Antihero A protagonist who is markedly unheroic
Aphorism A short witty saying
Apostrophe A figure of speech wherein the speaker talks directly to something that is nonhuman
Archaism The deliberate use of old-fashioned language
Aside A speech made by an actor to the audience, stepping out of the action
Assonance the repeated use of vowel sounds
Atmosphere The emotional tone or background that surrounds a scene
Ballad A long, narrative poem, typically written w a very regular meter/ rhyme and has a naive folksy quality
Bathos False pathos
Pathos A scene that evokes the feelings of pity, sadness
Black humor making fun of something that is not comic (joking about suicide -> I wonder if this branch will hold my weight if I hang my self )
Bombast pretentious, exaggeratedly learned language
Burlesque a broad parody, one that takes a style or form, such as a tragic drama and exaggerates it to a ridiculous degree
Cacophony(poetry) when the writer purposely uses harsh/awkward sounds
Cadence The beat/ rhythm of poetry in a general sense
Canto The name for a section div in a long work of poetry
Caricature A portrait (verbal/ect) that exaggerates a facet of personality
Catharsis refers to the "cleansing" of emotion an audience member experiences, (having lived vicariously through a member on stage)
Chorus a group of citizens who stand outside the main action on stage and comment on the action
