| Robert's Rules of Order | The book of authority of parliamentary law |
| Parliamentary Law | Assures that all sides of an issue are treated fairly and that everyone has an opportunity to discuss and vote |
| Voice vote | Method of voting where individuals say "aye" or "no" |
| Rising vote | Method of voting where you stand or show of hands |
| Secret ballot | Method of voting where you write on paper ballot often used for elections and nominations |
| Roll Call | Method of voting where the secretary asks each member to state vote |
| Single majority (Majority) | 51% (one vote more than 1/2) the votes cast/members present. This type of vote is necessary on the following types of motions: Adjourn, Refer to a committee, Amend, Main motion, Take from the table, lay on the table |
| Two-thirds majority | 2/3 of the members voting must vote for the motion, usually used when motion limits the rights of members, used for the following types of motions: previous question |
| Quorum | The number of members required to conduct business |
| Gavel | The symbol of authority, different taps from it means different things |
| 1 tap | Using the gavel, this is performed. It means for members to be seated, or the meeting is adjourned or is the result of a vote being announced |
| 2 taps | Using the gavel, this is performed. It means that the meeting is called to order |
| 3 taps | Using the gavel, this is performed. It means that members should stand on the last tap. |
| Series of taps | Using the gavel, this is performed. It means to be quiet and orderly. |
| Adjourn | Is the highest ranking motion of all the motions and basically can be made at any time. It requires majority of the votes and is the method to end the meeting. |
