Common Poetry Terms

TermDefinition
alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words such as the "w" in the line"And wait to watch the water clear, I may."
allusion A reference to a person, place, or event from literature, sports, history, movies, or the arts.
analogies A comparison between two things that seem dissimilar, in order to show the ways in which they might be similar. For example, He stopped as if he was a clock unwound.
figurative language When words and phrases are chosen to help a reader picture ordinary things in new ways (simile, metaphor,analogy.)
form The way a poem looks on the page.
free verse Poems that have no regular pattern.
