Common Poetry Terms
| Term | Definition |

| alliteration | The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words such as the "w" in the line"And wait to watch the water clear, I may." |
| allusion | A reference to a person, place, or event from literature, sports, history, movies, or the arts. |
| analogies | A comparison between two things that seem dissimilar, in order to show the ways in which they might be similar. For example, He stopped as if he was a clock unwound. |
| figurative language | When words and phrases are chosen to help a reader picture ordinary things in new ways (simile, metaphor,analogy.) |
| form | The way a poem looks on the page. |
| free verse | Poems that have no regular pattern. |
