Epic and Conventions

| Epic | a long narrative poem, elevated in style, serious in subject matter and centured on a hero on whose actions depends the fate of a race or of a nation |
| invocation of the muse | sometimes called epic questioning. Narrator speaks to the muse in the beginning |
| catalogue | list of heroes or combatants or figures |
| epic simile | elaborate vehicle becomes a digression |
| structure | often Homeric 12 or 24 books |
| epic speeches | formally delivered. Usually involves epic boast, moralizing, termination, posing epic questions, introducing events and speeches |
| miluer | sense of the world |
| freedom | freedom from the domination of observed fact |
| Epic boast | "fame-winning deeds have come to my hands... I had bound five giants -- their blood was upon me" |
| Epic Termination | "he ended" |
