| Connotation | overtone of meaning in a word; what it suggest beyond what it means |
| Irony | the discrepancy between appearance an reality |
| Verbal | saying the opposite of what one means |
| Situational | what occurs is the opposite of what one expects or what ought to occur |
| Dramatic | the speaker means what he says, but his words carry a meaning unperceived by him but seen by the audience. |
| Satire | the literary art of diminishing a subject for the purpose of reform |
| Horatian | gentle, directed against faults or foibles, we-centered |
| Juvenalian | harsh, directed against vices, they-centered |
| Imagery | the representation in language of sense experience. |
