data value | numerical value associated with a data item |

data | numerical information |

grouped frequency distribution | data items organized into appropriate numerical groups |

experiment | any occurrence for which the outcome is uncertain |

factorial | product of all of the positive integers n down through 1 |

sample space | set of all possible outcomes of an experiment |

combinations | an arrangement of non-repeating items in which order does not matter |

theoretical probability | based on situations in which the set of all equally likely outcomes is known |

median | data item, or mean of two data items, that is in the middle of a set of ranked, or ordered, data |

midrange | the average if the highest and lowest value data items in a set of data |

range | the difference between the highest and lowest value data items in a set of data |

descriptive statistics | concerned with collecting, organizing, summarizing, and presenting data |

sample | a subset or subgroup of the population |

population | set containing all people or objects described and analyzed by data collector |

random sample | sample obtained in such a way that every element in the population has an equal chance of being selected for the sample |

z-score | describes how many standard deviations a data item in a normal distribution lies above or below the mean |

double root | solution of an equation that occurs two times |

cubic equation | a polynomial equation of degree three |
