permutations | an arrangement of non-repeating items in which order does matter |
event | a subset of the sample space |
experiment | any occurrence for which the outcome is uncertain |
factorial | product of all of the positive integers n down through 1 |
sample space | set of all possible outcomes of an experiment |
combinations | an arrangement of non-repeating items in which order does not matter |
empirical probability | based on situations in which occurrence of events is observed |
theoretical probability | based on situations in which the set of all equally likely outcomes is known |
median | data item, or mean of two data items, that is in the middle of a set of ranked, or ordered, data |
midrange | the average if the highest and lowest value data items in a set of data |
range | the difference between the highest and lowest value data items in a set of data |
standard deviation | measurement of dispersion of a data set calculated using the deviation from the mean |
normal distribution | bell-shaped symmetrical graph with mean, median and mode all equal. |
mode | data item that occurs the most often in a set of data |
histogram | bar graph in which bars touch and the frequency is the vertical axis |
inferential statistics | draws conclusions from collected data |
descriptive statistics | concerned with collecting, organizing, summarizing, and presenting data |
sample | a subset or subgroup of the population |
population | set containing all people or objects described and analyzed by data collector |
random sample | sample obtained in such a way that every element in the population has an equal chance of being selected for the sample |
z-score | describes how many standard deviations a data item in a normal distribution lies above or below the mean |
double root | solution of an equation that occurs two times |
cubic equation | a polynomial equation of degree three |
linear equation | a polynomial equation of degree one |
quadratic equation | a polynomial equation of degree two |
Zero Product Property | If ab=0, then either a=0, or b=0 |
conjugates | two binomials that are the sum and difference of the same two terms |
