What is a fief? A fief is a piece of land, instead of money for their military service.
What did a knight promise in exchange for a fief? The knights promised support to a lord in exchange for land is called vassal
Define Vassal? A vassal swore that would always remain loyal to his lord. A knight who agrees to protect and serve a lord in exchange for land.
What is Feudalism? The system that governs the relationship between lords and vassals.
What was one of the responsibilities a lord had toward his vassal? To send help if attacked.
The buildings the lords built were known as? Castles
When would the knight have to give money to his lord? For weddings or his when his son became a knight.
Could a knight have more than one lord? Yes
Where did feudalism begin? Feudalism was first started by the Franks.
Who brought feudalism to England? A French noble named William the Conqueror.
In what year was England invaded by the Normans? Normans raided England in 1066.
What did William the Conqueror reward his knights with? William rewarded them with a large estate of land in his new country.
How did knights get to work on their fiefs? Knights would get peasants and farmers to grow food to live.
What is a manor? A manor is a large estate owned by a knight or lord.
Define Serfs. Works who were tied to the land on which they lived.
What did Serfs get in return for working for their lord? They got a small piece of lang to farm for themselves and received their lords' protection against outlaws and raiders.
True or False. Lords wanted people who lived on the land to produce everything they needed, including food and clothing. A manor was to be self-sufficient. True
Who was the judge, jury and tax collectors or a manor? The tax collector was the lord.
What hardships did lords have to survive? Farm land to survive.
