Chapter 9 Definition

Chemistry

Stereoisomers same atom-to-atom connectivity but different arrangement in space
Stereocentre / Chirality Centre atom (usually carbon) bound to four different groups
Chiral compound contains a stereocentre
Achiral compound contains no stereocentres
Enantiomers / optical isomers mirror image molecules which rotate plan-polarised light in opposing directions
Polarimeter measures rotation of polarised light by a sample
Racemic mixture 50:50 mixture of 2 enantiomers
R and S configurations of stereoisomers
