Non-Fiction Text Features

bold terms words that authors want you to notice
caption helps the reader understand what is in a picture or illustration
charts included in texts to give readers information in a visual way and allow them to compare and contrast
diagram a drawing with labels an author includes to help the reader see what something looks like
glossary a section of the text that includes words and their definitions and is similar to a dictionary
graph present information with lines, pictures, and symbols rather than words
heading tells the reader what information will be in a certain section
index an alphabetical listing of the topics discussed in a text with page numbers
map a text feature that helps the reader know where things are located and includes a key and legend
photographs help readers see what topics discussed in the text look like in real life
preview to help you look ahead to what will be in the chapter. It often tells the big idea of the chapter and key terms
table a chart of information presented in a visual way; it is often used to compare things
table of contents found at the beginning of a text and lists important sections or chapters with the page number each section starts on
timeline shows the reader important events in the order that they happened and usually includes dates
