Helpful poetry terms

| Poetry | One of the three major genres, or forms of literature |
| narrative poetry | tells a story and has the same literary elements such as character, plot and setting as works of prose fiction |
| Dramatic poetry | uses the techniques of drama to present the speech of one or more characters in verse form |
| Lyric poetry | expresses the thoughts and feelings of a single speaker |
| meter | Regular pattern of stressed & unstressed syllables in a poetic line |
| stanza | groups of poetic lines |
| Theme | The visual arrangements of a poem |
| Cuplet | two poetic lines |
| refrain | word, phrase, line, or group of lines repeated at regular intervals |
| rhyme | repetition of sounds at the ends of words |
| alliteration | repetition of initial consonant sounds |
| onomatopoeia | Use of words that sound like it means |
| imagery | Language that uses images. Words or phrases that appeal to one or more of the senses |
| figurative language | language to help a poet clarify meaning and evoke emotion |
| simile | compares two apparently unlike things using the words "like or as". |
| metaphor | shows similarity between two apparently unlike things without using the words like or as. |
| personification | gives human traits to something non human |
| hypobole | exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. |
| Oxymoron | combines two contradictory words |
| speaker | the person who tells the story, or poem |
