Atoms, Elements, and Chemical Reactions Study Guide

QuestionAnswer
How do you find the atomic number of an element? Its the top number on the little element square
How do you find the atomic mass? Its the number on the bottom underneath the word for the element
How do you find the protons and the electrons of the element? Its the same as the atomic number (top number)
How do you find the neutrons of the element? Atomic mass - Atomic number
Is breaking a chrome book a physical or a chemical change? Physical change
Is burning a hamburger a physical or chemical change? Chemical change
What are the reactants in this chemical equation? CH4 + 2 O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O CH4 + 2 O2
What are the products in this chemical equation? CH4 + 2 O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O CO2 + 2 H2O
How can you tell if this is a chemical reaction? You can tell a chemical reaction occurred because the reactants and products are different.
What happens to the mass of a substance when it changes phases. Nothing it stays the same because of law of conservation of mass.
If you combine two chemicals and they start to make your hand feel warm, what kind of chemical reaction is taking place? exothermic reaction because it is releasing heat
If you combine two chemicals and they suddenly turn dark, what kind of chemical reaction is taking place? endothermic because the reaction is absorbing energy
Why do endothermic reactions absorb energy? When the bonds in an endothermic reaction are being created between molecules, the energy is absorbed to create the bonds
Why do exothermic reactions release energy? When the bonds are being broken between molecules during an exothermic reaction, the energy that was holding them together is released.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
