| Scene | a place where something occurs in a setting or a story |
| Secondary Source | a piece of information that was passed along others by one who didn't witness an event |
| Tale | a story, either real or fiction, that is told |
| Thesis Paper | an explanation of the topic or purpose of a research paper |
| Word Play | Jokes and witty remarks |
| Allusion | passing reference or indirect mention |
| Appendix | supplementary material that is collected and appended at the back of a book |
| Characterization | the act of describing distinctive characteristics or essential features |
| Contrast | the act of distinguishing by comparing differences |
| Extended Metaphor | a comparison between two unlike things that continues throughout a series of sentences in a paragraph or lines a poem |
| Guide Word | a word printed at the top of a page indicating the first or last word entry on that page |
| Homonym | same pronunciation but different meaning AND spelling |
| Homograph | words with the same spelling but different meaning |
| Homophone | a letter or group of letters having the same sound as another |
| oxymoron | conjoining contradictory terms |
