literary terminology

QuestionAnswer
Exposition introduction, the first section of work that introduces the background information about the story like setting, characters, their relationships and their conflict
Setting the time and place of a story
Mood/Atmosphere the emotional environment predominant in the narrative
Tone what the author's voice often has. subtle turns of phrase pr use of the particular word instead of another can give us clues as to how the author feels about the subject
Protagonist the main character of a work of fiction
Antagonist he/she/those/that which are working in conflict with the protagonist
Conflict an essential element in most stories
Plot The arrangement of events that happen in the story
Parallel Plot weaving two or more story lines into one inclusive narrative
Episodic Plot Structure a series of loosely related incidents or episodes centered around a main character, event or experience. It does not necessarily follow the rising action/climax profile of story structure
Chronological Order a plot arrangement placing events in time order, as they happened
Prologue a part of the story that takes place before the main plot; a chapter by itself
Inciting Incident a significant event that sparks the conflict on which the story is based
Rising Action the series of main events or crises of the story which build tensions and suspense of the story towards the eventual climax
Suspense curiosity or uncertainty about what will happen next
Predicament a difficult situation to get out of or solve
Dilemma a situation where a character must make a choice between disagreeable or unfavorable
Crisis a decisive moment involving great anger or difficulty. the outcome of a crisis often results in a turning point in the life of the character who faces it.
Climax the turning point in the fortunes of the protagonist usually in the event that precipitates the resolution of conflict
