Exposition introduction; first section of work that introduces background information about setting, characters, conflicts, etc.
Setting time and place of story
Mood/Atmosphere the emotional environment predominant in the narrative
Tone the author's "voice" in the story; ie. bitterly resentful, sympathetic
Protagonist main character; typically the "good guy"
Antagonist/Antagonistic Force(s) character/force(s) against protagonist
External Conflict ch vs. ch ch vs. environment ch vs. society
Internal Conflict ch vs. self
Plot arrangement of events that happen in story; storyline
Parallel Plot 2+ narratives in one inclusive narrative
Episodic Plot Structure a series of loosely related incidents or episodes centered around the main character, event, or experience; does not necessarily follow the rising action/climax profile of the story structure
Chronological Order the order in which the events happened
Prologue a chapter of the story before the story begins; takes place before main plot
Inciting Incident a significant event in which the main conflict(s) are sparked
Rising Action action leading up to the climax
Suspense curiosity or uncertainty about what the future events hold
Predicament a difficult situation to get out of/solve
Dilemma a situation where a character must make a choice between disagreeable or unfavorable
Crisis a decisive moment involving great difficulty or danger; outcome is usually a turning point for character
Climax emotional high point;
