Basic Sentence Types

| Term | Definition |

| compliments/modifiers | words, phases, or clauses that accompany a verb phrase |
| intransitive | a subject followed by a predicate in which there is only a main verb followed by optional adverb phrases |
| structural formulas | linear method of representing the constituent structure. Constituents are arranged in the same order as the occur in basic form of sentence |
| adverbial modifier | modifies the verb by adding information about how, when, where, why, and how much something happened |
| adverb phrase of manner | adds information about the way or manner in which the action represented by the verb is carried out |
| adverb phrase of time | adds information about when the action of the verb is carried out |
| adverb phrase of place | adds information about where the action of the verb is carried out |
| referent | Noun or noun phrase in the predicate that refers to the same person, place, or thing as the subject noun phrase |
| direct object | immediately follows the verb and has a referent different from the noun phrase |
| object compliment | adjective that follows the direct object and has the same referent as the direct object |
