Figurative Language
Term | Definition |

Simile | A comparison that uses the signal word like or as. "Her eyes shine like stars." |
Metaphor | A direct comparison with no signal words |
Hyperbole | An exaggeration that cannot possibly be true. |
Personification | When a poet describes an animal or object as if it were human or had human qualities. For example, "the warm smile of the sun." |
Alliteration | The repetition of consonant sounds at the begging of words, such as, "w" in the line, "And wait to watch the water clear." |
Onomatopoeia | The use of words whose sounds suggest their meanings, such a crack, boom, and bang. |
Idiom | A descriptive expression that means something different than the combination of words that make it up. (Ex: Hold on a minute.) |
Allusion | A reference to a person, place, or event from literature, sports, movies, or the arts. |
Oxymoron | A combination of words that have opposite or very different meanings. |
