| Active Voice | When the subject of the sentence is the doer of the action in a sentence |
| Adage | A saying that set forth a general truth that has gained credibility through long use over time |
| Affix | One or more letters occurring as a bound form attached to the beginning, end, or base of a word, and serving to produce a derivative of a word |
| Allusion | An implied or indirect reference to literature to a familiar person, place, or event |
| Analogy | An extended comparison showing the comparison or two things |
| Analysis | The process in identifying the parts of a whole and their relationships with one another |
| Bias | The subtle presence of a positive or negative approach to a topic |
| Chronology | The sequential order in which events occur |
| Classification | A strategy a writer uses to group ideas that are similar or related |
| Cohesion | A quality of writing where ideas, details, and arguments move logically and finally throughout a piece of writing |
| Central idea / Controlling point | The unifying element of a piece of the text |
| Comparative adjective | The form that an adjective takes when comparing an act or manner of two things |
| Comparative Adverbs | The form an adverb takes when comparing an act or manner of two things |
| Convey | To communicate or make known |
| Coordinate adjectives | Two or more successive words in a sentence that modify or describe a noun |
| Correlative conjunction | Words that are used in pairs |
| Counter claim | An argument that is opposition to the claim/position provided in a pieces argumentative writing. It means to balance between the claim/position and its opposing views. This adds credibility to the writing by allowing a broader range of view points. |
| Dangling modifier | A modifier that it not clearly attached to the word or phrase that is supposed to be modified |

| Denotation | The direct or dictionary meaning of a word |
