| cell division | process by which a cell divides into 2 daughter cells |
| chromatids | each chromosome has 2 of these that are identical |
| centromeres | chromatids are attached here |
| interphase | an "in-between" period of growth |
| cell cycle | series of events cells go through as they grow and divide |
| mitosis | division of the ce4ll's nucleus, called the "M" phase |
| prophase | first and longest phase of mitosis |
| centrioles | two tiny structures located in the cytoplasm important in the prophase |
| spindle | fan-like structure that helps separate the chromosomes |
| metaphase | chromosomes line up in the center of the cell |
| anaphase | centromeres separate and become individual chromosomes |
| telophase | two nuclear membranes are formed |
| the last stage | final phase when cytoplasm separates. |
| cyclin | protein that helps regulate the cell cycle |
| cancer | disorder in which there is uncontrolled cell growth |
