reactant The compounds going in to a chemical reaction
physical change when the end material and the beginning material are the same

subscript the little number after a chemical symbol
solid a substance with a definite volume but not a definite shape
liquid a substance with a definite volume but not a definite shape
gas a substance without a definite volume or a definite shape
synthesis reaction a reaction where two compounds combine to become one
decomposition reaction a reaction where one substance breaks down into two substances
single displacement reaction a reaction where only one compound changes the molecule it is bonded to
double displacement reaction a reaction where two compounds switch the molecule they are bonded with
combustion a reaction where oxygen combines with a compound to produce water and carbon dioxide
melting when heat energy is added to change a solid to a liquid
freezing when heat energy is removed to change a liquid to a solid
sublimation when heat energy changes a solid directly into a gas
deposition when heat energy is removed changing a gas directly into a solid
condensation when heat energy is removed changing a gas into a liquid
vaporization/evaporation when heat energy is added changing a liquid into a gas
