| complete metamorphosis | a type of development consisting of 4 distinct stages; egg, larva, pupa, adult |
| incomplete metamorphosis | a type of development consisting of 3 distinct stages; egg, nymph, adult |
| nymph | the stage of incomplete metamorphosis during which an insect eats and grows and resembles a smaller version of the adult |
| egg | the first stage in the life cycle of many organisms, including birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and insects |
| larva | the stage of complete metamorphosis during which the organism resembles a worm |
| adult | a fully grown organism that can reproduce |
| chrysalis | cocoon, a protective covering a sheltered stage of being or growth |
| pupa | the stage of complete metamorphosis during which the organism seems to be at rest and new body parts are forming |
| molt | to shed the outer covering(hair, feathers, skin, fur, exoskeleton) to make room as an organism grows |
| stage | specific period of time during life or growth |
| life cycle | all stages in the life of an organism from birth to death |
