Oxidation and Reduction

Oxidation When something combines with Oxygen resulting in the loss of electrons
Reduction Gain of electrons
Oxidising agent oxidises something and is itself reduced. It is an electron acceptor
Reducing agent reduces something else and is itself oxidised. It is an electron donor.

What is the Oxidation number or state? the number of electrons lost, gained or shared by an atom in a compound. (Charge on ion)
What is the oxidation state of any element? Zero
What are charged compounds called? Compound ions
