Dred Scott v. Sanford | 1857 - Slaves are property and have no right to sue; people cannot be denied the right to take their property (slaves) anywhere in the US |
Plessy v. Ferguson | 1896 - Affirmed segregation of "separate but equal" facilities |
Korematsu v. U.S. | 1944 - War time internment of Japanese-Americans is ruled Constitutional. Case was overturned in 1984 |
Brown v. Board of Education | 1954-55 - Successfully argued by Thurgood Marshall, declared separate is inherently unequal in public school |
Miranda v. Arizona | 1966 - Ruled suspect must be informed of his rights to remain silent and right to counsel |
Roe v. Wade | 1973 - Right to abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy |
University of California v. Bakke | 1978 - Quotas for affirmative action in college admissions illegal except where discrimination has been found |
