9. Equations & Graph

TermDefinition
Equation A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal.
Inequality A statement that contains > (greater than) , < (less than), ≥ (greater than or equal to), or ≤ (less than or equal to) to compare two expressions.
Substitute The replacement of the variable of an expression with a number.
Independent Variable One of two variables in a relationship. Any value can be used for the independent variable. The value that is used determines the value of the other variable, the dependent variable.
Dependent Variable One of two variables in a relationship whose value is determined by the value used for the other variable, the independent variable.
Function A relationship or expression involving one or more variables.
x axis The horizontal line on a coordinate plane.
y axis The vertical line on a coordinate plane.
Linear Equation An equation whose graph is a straight line.
Variable A quantity that changes or varies, often represented with a letter.
Origin The point (0, 0) where the x- and y- axes of a coordinate plane intersect.
