| Term | Definition |

| Equation | A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal. |
| Inequality | A statement that contains > (greater than) , < (less than), ≥ (greater than or equal to), or ≤ (less than or equal to) to compare two expressions. |
| Substitute | The replacement of the variable of an expression with a number. |
| Independent Variable | One of two variables in a relationship. Any value can be used for the independent variable. The value that is used determines the value of the other variable, the dependent variable. |
| Dependent Variable | One of two variables in a relationship whose value is determined by the value used for the other variable, the independent variable. |
| Function | A relationship or expression involving one or more variables. |
| x axis | The horizontal line on a coordinate plane. |
| y axis | The vertical line on a coordinate plane. |
| Linear Equation | An equation whose graph is a straight line. |
| Variable | A quantity that changes or varies, often represented with a letter. |
| Origin | The point (0, 0) where the x- and y- axes of a coordinate plane intersect. |
