| Personification | The stars smile down at me. |
| Simile | He's as blind as a bat. |
| Simile | She never stops, as busy as a bee. |
| Personification | I work the night shift: I go to work when the city sleeps. |
| Metaphor | You are the apple of my eye. |
| Hyperbole | He has got tons of money. |
| Metaphor | Her grandmother was a rock. |
| Hyperbole | He's fatter than an elephant. |
| Hyperbole | My handbag weighs a ton. |
| Metonymy | Lend me your ears. |

| Understatement | “It is a bit cold today,” when the temperature is 5 degrees below freezing. |
| Onomatopoeia | I could hear their buzzing, so I knew there was a bee’s nest around here somewhere. |
| Synecdoche | Give us our daily bread |
| Onomatopoeia | We clapped our hands it time with the music. |
| Understatement | “I have to have this operation. It isn’t very serious. I have this tiny little tumor on the brain.” |
| Metonymy | Give me a hand. |
| Synecdoche | It is sure hard to earn a dollar these days. |
| Onomatopoeia | Quack, quack went the ducks as we threw them our stale bread. |
