Steve's Transmission

Gettin' Your Study On!!!

QuestionAnswer
When generally diagnosing the transmission, these are the mechanical steps you should follow: 1.Road test the vehicle 2. Diagnose Noise, Vibration, Harshness, Shift Quality Problems 3. Diagnose Fluid Usage, Type, Level, and condition problems 4. Pressure tests 5. Perform Stall Tests 6. Perform Torque converter Clutch Mechanical/Hydraulic tes
These are the general electronic system diagnosis steps to follow 1-4: 1. Road test 2. Pressure tests on transmission equipped with electronic pressure control 3. Torque Converter clutch electronic system test 4. Use appropriate test equipment and service info
These are the general electronic system diagnosis steps to follow 5-7: 5. Verify proper operation of charging system; check battery, connections, vehicle power, grounds 6. Differentiate between engine performance/ other systems and transmission problems 7.Shift quality concerns as a result of electronic transmission system
These things should be in good working order and checked first -Ignition system -Ignition timing -Fuel and Air Filters -Engine Manifold Vacuum Lines & Comp. -Positive Crankcase vent. system -cylinder compression -Exhaust system
Transmission should be checked first for: -Fluid levels and condition -Signs of fluid leakage -Proper shift and kickdown linkage adjustment -Loose or damaged electrical connections/wiring -Broken or disconnected vacuum lines & hoses
When performing a road test, check these things: -slippage -early, late, or erratic shift timing -poor shift quality -unusual noise/vibrations -torque converter clutch operation
While driving the car during the road test, make sure to do this while shifting: -accelerate moderately -record all shift points -in top gear, quickly open the throttle part way to test throttle downshift -Repeat by opening throttle fully -Check for coasting by decelerating to a stop
How to test the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) during the Road Test -lightly tapping on brake and observe the engine RPM -use a scan tool while engaging and disengaging the TCC
At the end of the road test, you should do this while the vehicle is in reverse: Check the transmission operation at part throttle and full throttle openings
Noise and Vibration of the Transmission at lower gears indicates this: Issues with Planet Pinion Gear
A whine noise indicates low transmission fluid levels. Check and adjust
A whine noise at all gear levels that is load or RPM sensitive or ceases when the TCC is engaged -May be caused by the TCC. TCC noise increases under load
A whine or growling noise that increases or with speed and is most noticable at low throttle is caused by Transaxle drive link assembly
A High Pitch Whine in all gear ranges and intensifies with RPM or is oil pressure sensitive can be caused by Transmission oil pump system
A Popping Noise in all gear ranges that sounds like popcorn popping can be cause by these 3 things: -transmission oil pump cavitation -transmission fluid strainer seam leak -damaged or improperly positioned transmission fluid strainer seal
A buzz or high frequency rattle can be caused by binding or contact of the transmission cooler pipes
A Ratcheting noise indicates this Weak, damaged, or misassembled parking pawl return spring
A Hum or final drive noise that is most noticeable under light acceleration and/or turns may be caused by transaxle final drive gear set
A Light Metallic Rattle Noise noticeable at light coast or under drive operation may be caused by these 3 things -damaged clutch pack -excessive clutch pack clearance -excessive clutch plate to case clearance
A Rattle Noise that occurs at idle or low speed indicates this loose flex plate mounting bolts
A Squealing Noise at low speed indicates this Defective Speedometer Gear
A whine noise in Park and Vibration in Reverse indicates this broken oil pump vane rings
A Vibration in Neutral run-up may indicate these 2 things -cracked or out of balance flex plate -Internal or External Engine Balancing components could also affect this
Vibration in general might be caused by these 5 things -Loose or Damaged Transmission and/or engine mounts -Loose or worn Drivetrain components -Loose or worn Suspension Components -Tire Imbalance -Loose or Worn Wheel Bearings
Which sensor is used to measure changes in temperature? Thermistor
Milky pink ATF generally indicates Water contamination
What describes severely overheated transmission fluid? Dark brown and smelly
Throttle linkage adjustment has a direct effect on Throttle pressure
Voltage readings over what indicate high circuit resistance that causes electronic control problems? 0.2 volt
What is the best method for determining the cause of a transmission malfunction? Pressure Test
What is a centrifugally operated valve driven off the transmission output shaft? Guv'nah Valve
A high RPM reading during a stall test indicates this: Clutch Slippage
A torque converter defect can cause these symptoms -slop acceleration from a stop -Poor high speed performance -Overheating
What variable resistor senses movement or position Potentiometer
What do you not need when performing a Road Test? Stall Speed Chart
If initial engagement is delayed when the transmission is first put in gear, the likely cause is: a defective oil pump or pump check valve
What tool do you not need to perform a pressure test? Vacuum pump
Control Pressure is also known as: Mainline pressure
Hydraulic Pressure that increases and decreases in response to changes in road speed is called Guv'nah Pressure
An air pressure test is used to do what? Pinpoint hydraulic leaks (duh)
Which electronic sensor transmits a digital signal? Hall (and Oats) Effect switch
The resistance of an NTC thermistor does what as temperature increases Decreases
Most late-model transmissions use which type of solenoid to engage the TCC? Pulse-width modulated
Hunting between gears during a road test might be caused by this: Incorrect shift solenoid adjustment
