| Term | Definition |

| Balance Wheel | Large wheel on the right side of the machine controls the up and down movement of the needle and thread take-up lever |
| Bobbin | A small, flat spool that holds the bottom thread |
| Bobbin winder clutch knob | Disengages clutch, so machine will fill the bobbin spool |
| Bobbin winder spindle | Holds the bobbin while thread is wound from the thread spool to the bobbin |
| Bobbin winder thread guide | Guides thread from spool pin to bobbin winder spindle |
| Feed Dogs | A set of metal "teeth" that move the fabric during stitching |
| Foot Control | Controls the speed of your stitching |
| Machine socket | Socket to connect the machine plug that connects to the foot control and power supply plug |
| Needle | Range from 60(very fine for delicate fabrics) to 110(very thick for coarse, heavy fabrics) |
| Needle plate | Metal plate, under the machine needle- on most machines, this metal plate is also etched with seam allowance markings for accurate sewing |
| Pattern selection dial | Stitch pattern control can be adjusted to make different stitching patterns |
| Power switch | Turns power on and off the sewing machine |
| Presser Foot | Holds the fabric firmly in place against the feed dogs for sewing |
| Presser foot lifter | A lever that rises and lowers the lesser foot |
| Slide plate | Opening, and closing o the bobbin case |
| Spool pin | Holds the spool thread |
| Stitch length dial | Used to adjust the length of the stitches from long to short |
| Thread cutter | Cuts thread |
| Thread tension dial | DIal for adjusting the tightness or looseness of the thread |
| Upper thread guide | Guides thread from spool pin to the tension area |
