| caption | The words beneath a photograph that explain the subject and give background information; help to shape the meaning of the photo. |
| comparison | Describes similarities between two or more items, either feature by feature or subject by subject. |
| declarative sentence | Makes a statement and ends with a period; most common type of sentence. |
| elaborate | To explain in greater detail (including adding thoughts and examples). |
| essay | An extended piece of non-fictional writing in which an author explores a subject in detail. It may be classified as narrative, descriptive, expository, or personal. |
| genre | A type or class of literary texts (e.g., poetry, narratives, essays, etc.) within which there are sub-categories or forms (e.g., haiku, short story, expository, etc.). |
| logical fallacies | Defects or mistakes that weaken arguments, such as hasty generalizations and missing the point, based on flawed reasoning. |
| scene | A subdivision of an act. |
| tone | The author's attitude towards the subject that he/she is writing about such as anger or approval, pride or piety, joy or pain. |
| unity | A quality of oneness, in which the parts hang together; each part of a work is interdependent and no part is irrelevant. |
