| Romanticism | a movement in literature and the fine arts, beginning in the early nineteenth century, that stressed personal emotion, free play of the imagination, and freedom from rules of form. |
| Transcendentalism | a movement in nineteenth-century American literature and thought that called on people to view the objects in the world as small versions of the whole universe and to trust their individual intuitions. |
| Realism | a manner of treating subject matter that presents a careful description of everyday life, usually of the lower and middle classes |
| Naturalism | a movement, esp in art and literature, advocating detailed realistic and factual description |
| Modernism | a deliberate philosophical and practical divergence from the past in the arts and literature occurring especially in the course of the 20th century and taking form in any of various innovative movements and styles. |
| Imagism | practice of a group of poets in between 1909 and 1917 who believed that poetry should employ the language of common speech, create new rhythms, have complete freedom in subject matter, and present a clear, concentrated, and precise image. |
