| Term | Definition |

| soliloquy | a speech delivered by a character when he or she is alone on stage |
| tone | is the overall feeling, or effect, created by a writer's use of words |
| tragedy | A literary work in which the hero is destroyed by some character flaw and by forces beyond his or her control |
| pun | Example: I bet the butcher the other day that he couldn’t reach the meat that was on the top shelf. He refused to take the bet, saying that the steaks were too high. |
| tragic hero | a character who experiences an inner struggle because of a character flaw. The struggle ends in a defeat of the hero |
| mood | the feeling a piece of literature arouses in the reader |
| motif | a term for an often repeated idea or theme in a text |
| irony | using a word or phrase to mean the exact opposite of its literal or normal meaning |
| dramatic irony | the reader or the audience sees a character's mistakes or misunderstandings, but the character himself does not |
| verbal irony | the writer says one thing and means another |
| situational irony | a situation where there is a great difference between the purpose of a particular action and the result |
| static character | a character who changes little if at all. Things happen to a static character without modifying their interior selves |
| dynamic character | a character who develops or changes as a result of the actions of the plot |
| aside | a brief commentary in which a character speaks to the audience, but the speech is unheard by the other characters on stage |
| catharsis | a feeling of emotional purging on the part of the audience during a tragedy |
| anagnorisis | a moment of insight or understanding in the mind of the tragic hero where they understand their circumstances |
| hubris | excessive pride (often the tragic flaw that causes the heroes downfall) |
