| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are the four forces of flight? | Thrust, Lift, Weight, Drag. |
| What is Lift? | Lift is a force upward. This force is greater than gravity therefore the object will stay in the air. |
| What is Drag? | Drag is a force that slows you down and works in the opposite direction your traveling in. |
| What is Weight? | Weight is a downwards pull and works against things trying to fly. |
| What is Thrust? | Thrust is a force that moves the aircraft forward. |
| Why is drag important to the flight of an airplane? | Drag is important to the flight of an aircraft because drag slows the aircraft down and reduces the speed. |
| What is the angle of attack and how does it affect lift and drag? | That angle of attack affects lift and drag because if the angle increases the amount of lift and drag also increase. If the angle is too great the lift drops and this creates turbulence. Also this increases drag and reduces lift. |
| How are planes designed to reduce drag? | Planes are designed to reduce drag by having a sleek body, a swept back tail ,and curved back wings. |
| What do ailerons, elevators, and rudder do on an airplane? | They control the surfaces on the airplanes wings and tail: witch allow the pilot to steer I n an direction. |
| What happens when a pilot one of the control surfaces on an airplane? | It changes the air pressure acting on the pilot to steer in any direction. |
| How do helicopters and airplanes move differently? | Airplanes move forward quickly so air can pass under and over its wings to produce lift. A helicopter is lifted straight up in the air by the of the blades cutting through the air. |
| What is the Bernoulli's principal? | The Bernoulli's principal is that moving liquid is like air pressure and if a liquid is moving along a surface it causes the force to be exerted. And a faster moving liquid causes less force than a slower moving liquid. |
| What are some skills/qualities that a pilot auditioning to become a member of Canada's Snowbirds would have to have? | -No fear of heights -Need to be focussed -Excellent awareness -To know what to do if they hit high air pressure or turbulence -To have experience with flying planes -Need to be brave and courageous |
| Why is model _____ Better than model _____? | Model _____ is better than model _____ because it shows a larger curve witch allows the air pressure to build up so it can lift into the air. |
