Fractions

TermDefinition
hundredth One of the equal parts when a whole is divided into 100 equal parts.
thousandth One of 1000 equal parts of a whole.
tenth One of the equal parts when a whole is divided into 10 equal parts.
fourths The parts you get when you divided something into four equal parts.
eighths The parts you get when you divide something into eight equal parts.
fifths The parts you get when you divide something into five equal parts.
unit fraction A fraction that has number 1 as its numerator.
decimal a number with one or more digits to the right of a decimal point.
decimal fraction A fractional number with a denominator with a power of 10. Usually written with a decimal point.
like denonimators Denominators in two or more fractions that are the same.
fraction A way to describe a part of a whole or a part of a group by using equal parts.
numerator The number written above the line in a fraction. It tells how many equal parts are in the fraction.
denominator The quantity below the line in fractions. It tells how many parts are in the whole.
mixed number A number that has a whole number (not 0) and a fraction.
equivalent fraction Fractions that have the same value.
improper fraction A fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator.
common denominator For two or more fractions, a common denominator is a common multiple of the denominators.
unlike denominator Denominators that are not equal.
visual fraction model A visual representation of a fraction.
decimal point A dot (.) separating the whole number fro the fraction in decimal notation.
simplify To express a fraction in its simplest form.
benchmark fractions Fractions that are commonly used for estimation.
lowest terms When a fraction is expressed with the lowest possible terms. (Also called simplest form.)
scaling To increase or decrease proportionately in size.
simplest form When a fraction is expressed with the fewest possible pieces. (Also called lowest terms.)
