Acids, Alkalis, Bases and Salts

What is an acid? A substance which produces hydrogen ions when they are added to water
What is a base? A substance which reacts with acids to neutralise them
What is an alkali? A base which dissolves in water to make an alkaline solution.
What ions to alkalies produce when they are dissolved in water? Hydroxide Ions
Which metals do acids react with? Ones which are above hydrogen in the reactivity series
Acid + Metal → Salt + Hydrogen Gas
What are metal oxides and metal hydroxides? Bases
Acid + Base → Salt + Water
Acid + Alkali → Salt + Water
What is ammonia solution? An alkali which doesn't contain a metal
Acid + Ammonia Solution → Ammonium Salt + Water
