| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| valence electron | are those lectrons that have the highest energy level and held most lossely |
| electron dot diagrams | includes the symbol for the element surrounded by dots. Each dot stands for one valence electron |
| chemical bond | is the force of attraction that holds two atoms together as a result of the rearrangement of electrons between them |
| ion | is an atom or group of atoms that has an electric charge |
| polyatomic ion | ions that are made of more than one atom and react as a unit |
| ionic bond | is an attraction between two oppositely charged ions |
| ionic compound | a compound that consists of postive and negative ions |
| chemical formula | is a combination of symbols that shows the ratio of elements in a compound |
| subscript | tells you the ratio of elements in the compound. |
| crystal | ions form an orderly three dimensional arrangement by repeating patterns of ions |
| covalent bond | the chemical bond when two atoms SHARE electrons |
| molecule | a neutral particle made of two or more atoms joined by covalent bonds |
| double bond | the two atoms share two pairs of electrons |
| triple bond | in which their atoms share three pairs of electrons |
| molecular compound | is a compound that is composed of molecules that are covalently bonded |
| polar bond | a covalent bond in which electrons are shared unequally |
| non polar bond | if two atoms pull equally on the electrons neither atom become charged |
| alloy | is a mixture made of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal. Stronger and less reactive than pure metals |
| metallic bond | an attraction between a positive metal ion and the many electrons surrounding it...the positive charged metal ion are embedded in a sea of valence electrons |
