| Term | Definition |

| Narrative poem | poetry that tells a story. it contains characters, a setting, and a plot. It may also contain a rhythm., imagery, and figurative language. |
| Lyric poem | A short poem in which a speaker expresses personal feelings. Meant to be sung, strong melodic rhythm. |
| Ballad | A type of narrative poem that tells a story and was originally meant to be sung. Normally written in four line stanzas. |
| Haiku | A form of Japanese verse, written in 17 syllables divided into three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables and employing highly evocative illusions. Most of the time it is about nature. |
| Sonnet | A poem that has a formal structure. Containing 14 lines and a rhyme scheme. Often has a three quatrains, or a 4 line units, and a final couplet. |
| Concrete Poem. | A poem who's meaning is conveyed through its graphic shape, pattern on the page, also called shape verse. |
| Rhyme | The occurrence of similar sounds at the end of two or more words. |
| Rhyme Scheme | A pattern of end rhymes in a poem. Noted by assigning a letter of the alphabet to each line. The lines that rhyme are the same letter. |
| Meter | A pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. Each unit is known as a foot. |
| Alliteration | The repetition of constant sounds at the beginning of words. |
| Onomatopoeia | The use of words who sounds echo their meanings. |
| Simile | A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things using "like" or "as". |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two things that are basically unalike but have some qualities in common. Does not use "like" or "as". |
| Personification | Giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea. |
| Allusion | A reference to a famous person, place, event, or work of literature. |
