| Legislature | law-making body, known as parliament. |
| Precedent | Ruling in a earlier case that was similar. |
| common law | Rests on court cases rather than regulations |
| natural rights | Rights that the government cannot take away |
| social contract | Agreement among people in society |
| colony | A group of people in one place who are ruled by a parent country elsewhere. |
| joint-stock company | Investors partial ownership and a share in future profits. |
| charter | A written document granting land and the authority to set up a colonial governments. |
| Proprietary Colony | In which the owner, or proprietor, owned the land and controlled the government. |
| Royal colony | One owned directly by the king. |
| religious dissenters | those who followed a faith other than the official religion of england. |
| puritans | people who wanted to reform, or purify the anglican church. |
| pilgrims | people on a religious journey. |
| toleration | acceptance of other religions. |
| indentured servant | Poor people who worked for food, clothing, and shelter until their labor contracts expired. |
| plantation | large estate. |
| triangular trade | the pattern of trade among the americas, africa, and europe. |
| Tidewater | areas of flat, low plains. |
| egalitarianism | equality |
| Mercantilism | Theory that a country's power depends on its wealth |
