Triple Alliance Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. In WWI, Austria-Hungary and Germany were allies. Italy did not immediately take a side, but eventually sided with the Allied Powers
Triple Entente Russia, France and Great Britain. Russia and France immediately made up the Allied powers. Great Britain did not enter the conflict until the coastline of Great Britain was compromised by the assault on Belgium. Entente is the French word for agreement
Central Powers Immediately composed of Germany and Austria-Hungary. Later Turkey and Bulgaria entered the fight on the Central Powers side.
Allied Powers Composed of over 20 nations. Initially France, Russia, and Great Britain. Later Japan, Italy and the US fought on the Allied side.
German U-Boats New weapon of Germany. Old laws of naval warfare could not be made to apply to U-boats. Germany declared submarine War zone around Great Britain February 4 1915.
British Naval Blockade British naval blockade of the Atlantic Ocean stopped trade between the US and Germany. In retaliation, Germany declared unrestrained submarine war fare. Great Britain controlled the Northern Sea, which led to all the German ports.
Arabic A British liner that was sunk by German U-boats in August 1915. Two Americans were killed. Germany agreed to not sink unarmed and unresisting passenger ships without warning
Alvin York Tennessee-bred Alvin C. York, a member of an anti-war religious sect, became a hero when he single-handedly killed 20 Germans and captured 132 more in the Meuse-Argonne offensive.
