What is the name of the oldest tree in the world? Methuselah
How does Methuselah provide evidence for the account of the worldwide flood reported in the Bible? It's only about 4,700 years old, which is about when the Flood occurred. If the Flood didn't occur, there would be trees much older than that.
What are the three kinds of leaves conifers can have? Needle-like Awl-like scale-like
What is the process by which conifers produce seeds? They produce pollen cones and seed cones. When the pollen cones release their pollen, if it reaches a seed cone, fertiliztion occurs and seeds develop.
How long does it take for an egg to be fertilized? a year
How can forest fires be beneficial to a forest? The burned trees fertilize the soil and the cleared land becomes homes to a bigger variety of living things.
Name two conifers that don't produce cones. Junipers and yews.
Name two gymnosperms that aren't conifers. Cycads and ginkgo
Why are cycads considered gymnosperms? Because they produce cones rather that fruits.
Describe a cycad. It looks like a palm, but it produces cones. (grows in warm areas)
Describe the gingko. It looks like an angiosperm because its leaves are broad and fall off before winter. (once thought it was extinct)
Why are gingkos considered gymnosperms? They produce uncovered seeds.
What makes cycad and gingko different from other gymnosperms? Cycads have wood and leaves like angiosperms, and ginkgos have leaves like angiosperms.
Why do people prefer to plant the male Ginkgo biloba? The female ginkgo makes seeds, and when the seed coats come off, they smell terrible.
What we often call the wood that comes from a gymnosperm. softwood
