| clause | a group of words that contain a subject and verb |
| complex sentence | contains one independent clause----no subordinate clause |
| A compound-complex sentance | A compound-complex sentence is made from two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses |
| connotation | the associated or secondary meaning of a word or expression in addition to its explicit or primary meaning |
| denotation | the explicit or direct meaning or set of meanings of a word or expression, as distinguished from the ideas or meanings associated with it or suggested by it |
| context | the parts of a written or spoken statement that precede or follow a specific word or passage, usually influencing its meaning or effect |
| conventions | a meeting or formal assembly, as of representatives or delegates, for discussion of and action on particular matters of common concern. |
